Changing PathWays is a court-approved treatment program for men or women that are abusive to their partners. We are funded by Alberta Health Services and the Provincial Family Violence Treatment Program. Our treatment is a psycho-educational group format, utilizing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, Trauma Informed Care and the latest research in Neuroplasticity.
Acceptance into our program is not automatic. After contacting us to register for a group, an assessment interview is done to ensure suitability. Anyone that has been abusive to a partner is welcome to join the program provided there is a desire to change and grow. People with unaddressed substance abuse and/or severe mental health problems are not suitable for our program. To register contact Angelica at 780-439-4635 ext 222.
Phase I
Our Phase I group is for voluntary and mandated clients. Participants are helped to recognize abusive behaviours in their intimate relationships and to take responsibility for changing their behaviour. Most of our clients have used unhealthy methods to deal with frustration and anger because they have not learned the skills to respond in a healthy manner. We assist our clients to develop new skills that help them interact with their partners in non-abusive ways.
The group format helps clients to share their experience with others who have struggled with similar issues. Instead of feeling shame and isolated, participants find understanding and compassion for their circumstances and are given the tools to make positive, healthy changes.
Phase I is offered in the following formats:
12 weeks (weekday, weekday evening, 2.5 hrs/wk) – men or women’s groups
Phase II
Phase II is a voluntary group for men who have completed Phase I. It is offered Monday evenings as a drop-in format. In this group, participants practice new skills to help maintain non-abusive relationships and find support and encouragement to continue making positive changes.
